The Arabic alphabet is used as the writing script for several world-wide languages. It is an inherently cursive script where most consecutive characters in a word are connected. The simplest and most frequent form of connecting characters is via a horizontal stroke called Kashidah.

Kashida is a type of justification used in some cursive scripts, particularly Arabic.

Arabic-Persian scripts feature prominent horizontal strokes, whose length is accordingly flexible. Kashida can also refer to a character representing this elongation, or to one of a set of glyphs of varying lengths that are used to implement this elongation in a font.
